The Goddess was carved in bas-relief into the inner wall of the temple and stained with red ocher, the light of the single oil lamp dancing in her contours. She wore a headdress of horns and various necklaces and bracelets and rings, but was otherwise nude, her body curved and feminine, sensual and fearful. She held her hands up and palms forward, containing in each an ankh-like shepherd’s crook. Her wings were spread wide and below the knee her legs became those of a bird, taloned feet perched on two placid bulls, the bull the moon’s sworn servant. There were moans of pleasure echoing through the temple and on the offering table below the Queen of the Night a priestess lay on her back, linen gown bunched around her waist, teeth biting her lower lip, and a clay mask covering the top half of her face crowned with smooth crescent horns. There was a head between her legs but her lover was otherwise invisible, crouching off of the offering table and outside the penumbra of the lamp. The unseen lover’s hand gripped the priestess’s flank; on the tip of the thumb was a coiled ring that curved over the finger tip in a fanged cobra’s hood, which sank into the exposed flesh, a feverish gasp escaping the priestess as a trickle of blood slid down her iliac crest…

“Stop. Stop. I…give me a minute.”

Johnny O raised himself on his arms to pull out of her, but she grasped his buttocks to hold him in place. He had not come yet and her muscles were fluttering, contracting around him, and she was hot, but like the cold heat of a fever she wanted to be enveloped by his warmth. It had been ages since anyone fucked a vision into her.

“Okay,” she said, releasing him and pressing lightly on his shoulders. He withdrew from her. She turned on her stomach. The sheet was saturated with her sweat. Outside, snow silently assailed the window.

“Get behind me, Satan,” she said.
